Richie Buckley – The General
Richie Buckley, the renowned Irish saxophone player was born in Dublin the son of a well known jazz musician, Dick Buckley. Early musical promise developed into a unique style and virtuoso technique which eventually led to a professional career spanning contemporary, jazz and rock idioms. He is perhaps most widely known as a member of Van Morrison’s band, but has also played with Freddie Hubbard, Jiggs Wigham, Dave McKenna, as well as, Bob Dylan, Jon Hendricks, Georgie Fame and Carlos Santana to name but a few. He has performed and recorded with most major Irish artists including The Cranberries, Christy Moore, SinŽad O’Connor and Bill Whelan.
Jazz, contemporary, rock and Irish traditional musictogether with remarkable natural talent have gone towards making Richie Buckley a formidable player, writer, and arranger. This, his film score for John Boorman’s film, `The General’, catches every nuance of Martin Cahill’s life and more particularly of Dublin the city which made and ultimately destroyed him. No more can be asked of a film score.
